"Discover the fascinating habitats of the estuary with us."

Our interpretive canoe programs focus on the near shore environments of the tidal Hudson River, especially the natural history of Constitution Marsh and the surrounding Hudson Highlands. It's easily the best deal around, as our own expert Audubon naturalists lead you through winding channels lined with tall, elegant marsh grasses, searching for hidden wildlife. Enjoy the physical activity and beautiful scenery, and learn the secrets of the Sanctuary.

Reservations are required for all canoe trips. We provide the canoes, paddles, and life jackets, and a safety lesson precedes the trip. At least one adult with paddling experience must accompany each canoe. Trips are tide and weather dependent, and normally last between two and three hours. From Scenic Hudson: "Hikers at West Point Foundry Preserve enjoy a tranquil soundtrack—the gentle murmur of Foundry Brook. That's a far cry from the din greeting 19th-century visitors to the sprawling West Point Foundry that filled this ravine. Established in 1818 to supply the U.S. government with artillery, the ironworks employed hundreds of workers who produced some of America's first steam engines, locomotives and ironclad ships, as well as pipes for New York City's water system and Parrott guns, cannon credited with winning the Civil War. The foundry's owners also were business pioneers, among the first to control every aspect of manufacturing, from raw material to product distribution. "For much of its 315-mile course, the Hudson River flows straight and broad. But at the Highlands, the Appalachian mountain chain intersects the river to create a fifteen mile stretch of rugged, mountainous landscape. This area contains the river's narrowest and deepest points, as well as its fastest currents. The Hudson River is an estuary, a mixture of salt and freshwater, and the saltwater line extends just north of Beacon. The River is tidal all the way up to the Troy Dam above Albany."
