It is located only one hour north of New York City, in the lower Hudson Valley, where its pristine 500-acre landscape of fields, hills, and woodlands provides the setting for a collection of more than 100 carefully sited sculptures created by some of the most acclaimed artists of our time."

He studied sculpting with Moshe Sternschuss (1947 - 1950) and Rudi Lehmann (1954) and then went to London where he enrolled at the St. Martin’s School of Art and Design. Kadishman returned to Israel in 1972 where he was awarded the Dizengoff Prize for sculpture in 1990 and the Israel Prize for sculpture in 1995.

Adonai’s two vertical cylinders suggest an entrance portal and its long horizontal cylinder suggests a nave. The sculpture’s name, Adonai, is the Hebrew word for God.
Adonai is constructed using abandoned rusted underground storage tanks that Liberman purchased at auction as salvage. Adonai is one of only few of Liberman’s early works in which the components were used in their natural rusted state. Its cylindrical elements are cantilevered to suggest movement, particularly upward thrust. Liberman states, “I want the extreme thrust, or the extreme overhang, because I want to achieve a certain sense of awe. For dramatic impact you have to dominate the spectator. One of the ways of achieving this is by having great overhangs, effects that create wonder.”

Five hundred acres of landscaped lawns, fields and woodlands provide the site for postwar sculptures by internationally renowned artists. At Storm King, the exhibition space is defined by sky and land. Unencumbered by walls, the subtly created flow of space is punctuated by modern sculpture.

"The grounds are surrounded by the undulating profiles of the Hudson Highlands, a dramatic panorama integral to the viewing experience. The sculptures are affected by changes in light and weather, so no two visits are the same. Fifty years after its founding, Storm King continues to grow and evolve, and is among the world’s leading sculpture parks."

Collection
Storm King Art Center’s distinguished collection comprises more than 100 sculptures by some of the most acclaimed artists of our era. Works at Storm King encompass the years from post-World War II to the present and include gifts, acquisitions, specially commissioned site-specific works, and loans. While the focus of the collection has been on large-scale abstract sculpture, much of it in steel, it also includes figurative work and sculpture in stone, earth, and other materials.

History of Storm King Art Center
The nonprofit Storm King Art Center was founded and opened to the public in 1960, thanks to the efforts of the late Ralph E. Ogden and H. Peter Stern, co-owners of the Mountainville-based Star Expansion Company.

"The initial gift of what is today the Museum Building and its surrounding property was made by the Ralph E. Ogden Foundation, Inc. Over time, Star Expansion Company donated 300 contiguous acres, as well as 2,100 acres of Schunnemunk Mountain (now owned by the State of New York and designated Schunnemunk Mountain State Park) that preserve Storm King Art Center’s view-shed.

"Although Storm King was originally envisioned as a museum devoted to Hudson River School, by 1961 its founders had become committed to modern sculpture. Early purchases were sited directly outside the Museum Building as part of a formal garden scheme. However, with the 1966 purchase of thirteen works from the estate of sculptor David Smith (1906¬1965), Storm King began to place sculpture directly in the landscape. Since then, every work has been sited with consideration of both its immediate surroundings and distant views."

Museum Building:
Completed as a residence in 1935 for the late Vermont Hatch, the French Normandy-style building was designed by architect Maxwell Kimball. The building's granite stones were salvaged from Danskammer, the 1834 Edward Armstrong mansion located north of Newburgh that stood overlooking the Hudson River for almost 100 years. The five Ionic columns now situated on the Art Center's property formed the front of Danskammer. The interior of the museum building contains many period details such as walnut paneling, and walnut and oak parquet floors. Inside are nine exhibition galleries, a museum shop, and offices.

Landscape
Visitors to Storm King are encouraged to enjoy nature as well as art, to meander on trails and discover sculptures, or to traverse the fields to walk among monumental works. The grounds are under a carefully supervised program of maintenance and change. The Art Center has developed the North Trail and a wooded grove with sculptures, and several walking paths.

Visitors may walk through the grounds or take a self-guided tour aboard a handicap-accessible tram that travels through the main portion of the grounds. An audio-guide is available for rental at the museum shop.
